Job Opening

We're looking for a talented and enthusiastic person to join the team that create the LinuxHQ web site. You will be involved in the day to day activities related to Linux kernel development, projects, applications, and other content areas.

Duties

You will be involved in the following:
  • Read and respond to user emails.
  • Monitor Linux kernel status, posting updates as available.
  • Maintain and expand current content.
  • Propose and implement new content.
  • Promote Linux and LinuxHQ at events, on forums & lists.
  • Participate in staff discussions and debates.

Skills in the following areas are also desired:

  • Develop banners, buttons and other graphics.
  • Write and/or modify PERL scripts.

Location

Our present team work from their homes, so there are no geographical or nationality requirements. Applicants who live in Eastern Ontario area can work directly on the network at our offices if desired.

If you are considering working from your home, you will need the following:

  • 500MHz or faster PC with Linux, Apache, CVS & SSH installed. At least 12Gb of disk space will be needed.
  • You must have access to the Internet with ISDN, cable modem, xDSL, T1 or T3 connection. A modem connection (56K) will not allow you to work effectively.
  • You should be able to arrange a work environment conducive to professional development (a quiet place where you will not be interrupted).

Profile

The ideal person for this position should:

  • Be open minded, flexible and able to work on multiple projects at once, yet be methodical in approach.
  • Be self-motivated and able to work with minimal supervision.
  • Be proficient in written communication in the English language and be able to express ideas clearly.

Requirements

The ideal applicant must be proficient in:
  • Linux installation, configuration and administration
  • Apache installation and configuration
  • HTML 4.01
  • Javascript

And it will be a definite plus if you can demonstrate experience in:

  • Kernel configuration and compiling
  • GIMP
  • Perl
  • mod_perl
  • MySQL or other SQL database

Compensation

This is an entry level, contract position. You must be available for a minimum of 24 hours per week but will set your own work schedule. You will be paid on an hourly basis for actual time worked as reported to our project trackign system. Invoicing is done every 2 weeks with cheques mailed approximately 2 weeks later. You are responsible for all federal, state and local taxes as well as any other requirements. Reasonable expenses (travel, supplies, telephone) will be reimbursed upon approval.
